On Friday evening, November 4th, The SASS Foundation for Medical Research held its annual Gala Dinner Dance & Casino at the spectacular Plaza Hotel in NYC.
This year the event brought together over 300 local and national business people, medical professionals, and loyal supporters and benefactors and their support helped to raise nearly half a million dollars.

The enthusiastic attendees paid tribute to three very special individuals. The Courage Award was bestowed upon Beth Gold-Cohen, Roslyn, NY. Beth has always believed in helping others, long before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has been an avid fundraiser and worked hard for her local schools, a children’s hospital and for cancer research. In 2006, after her diagnosis, Beth chose to reinvent herself, and as a result of her battle with cancer, started a hugely successful business (Lisse Leggings) and dedicates part of the proceeds from this venture to fight this disease. Because of her bravery and courage, The SASS Foundation presented Beth with the 2011 Courage Award. The Business Leadership Award was presented to John A. Catsimatidis, by his close friend and well-known singer, Jay Black. Mr. Catsimatidis is the Chairman/CEO of Red Apple Group. In 1968, John opened a small supermarket on Manhattan’s upper Westside that evolved into the iconic supermarket chain known as the Gristedes Supermarkets. Mr. Catsimadis is a well known philanthropist and is an active supporter of many charities. He is a legendary fundraiser in New York and national politics. The 2011 Business Leadership award speaks to John’s devotion and commitment to community and country.

Versatile entertainer, Joe Piscopo, provided both comedy and music from his vast repertoire during the event. Ed Kranepool, former baseball great and member of the Amazin’ 1969 NY METS winning team; was on hand to meet and great the crowd.

The co-founders of The SASS Foundation, Martin & Barbara Sass and Dr. Francis Arena, greeted the throngs of happy revelers and encouraged the guests to participate in the silent auctions and casino with all proceeds going to cancer research.

Some major corporate sponsors of this event were MD Sass Companies, Kramer Levin, Berdon, Sidley Austin, RSM McGladry, Bracewell & Giuliani, Deloitte Touche, Bloomberg, NRAD, and Next Gen Radiology, We thank them and the many other supporters for their help in underwriting this fabulous evening.

Noted Medical Professionals in attendance included Dr. Sudhir Gupta, Chairman, Scientific & Medical Boards, SASS Fdn.; Dr. Kanti Rai, Dr. Andrew Schafer, Dr. Richard Silver, Dr. Morton Coleman and Dr. Dwight DeRisi, all members of The SASS Medical Board of Advisors. We thank them for their tireless efforts toward finding a cure.

The funds raised at this fabulous event will go directly into medical research and education programs to help unlock the mysteries involved in the onset and progression of cancer and blood related diseases.

The SASS Foundation June 6th Golf & Tennis Outing Honoring the Poll Brothers is a Huge Success - Nearly $200,000.00 raised!

100 Golfers and 55 Tennis Players who teamed up together on a bright and sunny day at the majestic Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley were determined to have fun - while raising as much money as possible for the newly formed SASS Foundation Carol Litwin Memorial Research Fellowship to fund breast cancer research.
The deserving Honorees were Gillis Poll and George Poll, Premier Restaurateurs, owners of some of the most popular restaurants on Long Island, including Bryant & Cooper Steakhouse, Cipollini, Toku, and Bar Frites.

The event culminated with a sumptuous cocktail reception and awards dinner under the stars. The Poll Brothers were presented with Special Awards for their outstanding charitable efforts and Tennis Co-chair, Bob Litwin was given a plaque to honor Carol’s Litwin memory and to mark the birth of newly formed SASS Foundation Carol Litwin Memorial Research Fellowship - which we hope will lead to finding a cure. To date, nearly $200,000.00 has been raised through the efforts of the participants, supporters and sponsors of this special day.
We applaud the Tennis Co-Chairs: Bob Litwin, Lara Sass Sivin & Ari Sass & the Golf Co-Chairs: Phil Sivin, Tom Constance and Richard Schwartz for their hard-working efforts in making this the most successful outing this The SASS Foundation’s most successful outing ever.
